Galvanising Process Guide
What is galvanisation?
Galvanisation, also known as galvanising or hot-dip galvanisation, has been used for hundreds of years to protect iron and steel from rust and corrosion. It is used widely in agriculture, horticulture, construction, fastenings and more.
What are the types of galvanising?
The main type of galvanising is hot-dip galvanising. Origin Suregreen offer two types of hot-dipped galvanised panels: Standard and Premium.
Our Standard Wire Mesh Panels are hot-dipped galvanised before welding, meaning that each individual wire is galvanised and then welded together to form the panel. This is a more economical process, however, carries a small risk that the welded process may remove a small amount of the galvanised coating.
Our Premium Wire Mesh Panels are galvanised after welding, meaning that there is 100% coverage and no chance of any part of the panel not having the protective coating.
What is the process of galvanisation?
Hot-dip galvanisation, or galvanising, is the process of submerging steel or iron into a bath of molten zinc protective coating to produce a corrosion resistant, multi-layered coating of zinc-iron alloy and zinc metal. Whilst the steel is immersed in the zinc, a metallurgical reaction occurs between the iron in the steel and the molten zinc and this diffusion process causes the coating to form perpendicular to all surfaces to create a uniform thickness.
How does galvanisation prevent rusting?
Hot dip galvanised steel is durable, sustainable, proven, reliable and cost-effective. Galvanising is used to protect steel or iron from rust by:
•Forming a barrier that prevents corrosive substances from reaching the steel or iron; and
•Serving as a sacrificial anode so that even if the coating is scratched, the exposed steel will stillbe protected by the remaining zinc.
